MSEA's Response to the Cell Phone Ban
Aug 15, 2024
The Manitoba School Esports Association (MSEA) acknowledges the release from Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning of the “Enhancing Guidelines for Cell Phone Use in Schools to Minimize Distractions and Support Student Learning and Safety”. It is the stance of MSEA that some of the most profound benefits of scholastic esports exist in the underlying focus on education and skill development that teachers bring to the table when supporting, guiding, mentoring, and coaching students in scholastic esports. This is done through the modeling and teaching of responsible behaviour and conduct during gameplay, both through in person and digital communication. Scholastic esports bring students from all walks of life together to learn these valuable digital literacy skills in a safe, responsible, and meaningful way to prepare them for a technologically advanced world. While these new guidelines may have an impact on the logistics of scholastics esports in some schools, MSEA will continue to work with teachers and students from across Manitoba, as well as our provincial partners, to provide and support the teaching and learning of digital literacy skills to Manitoba students through the lens of scholastic esports.
